Bedrooms can often become rooms where things are dumped that don’t belong there
In order to create a stylish and comfortable bedroom, you need to purchase a quality mattress, bed linen and cosy pillows. Then comes the design of the space, which reflects your personal aesthetic. That’s why experts have named for Real Simple the things that can clutter up your bedroom and create a space that isn’t quite so relaxing.
Exercise equipment you don’t use
Bedrooms are made for relaxing, so they shouldn’t be gyms. However, if you have a small home, it’s fine to have exercise equipment in there bedroom, but in the event that you use it.
“This year it was finally time to get rid of the treadmill, which is cluttered with clothes. It’s not a wardrobe. Piles of clothes on the treadmill, bike or even on a chair signal that you’re putting off a resolution and add stress,” said certified virtual organiser and founder of B. Organised Nicole Gabay.
So the expert advises moving these items to another room or selling them altogether if you’re training elsewhere.
Things you no longer wear
A cluttered wardrobe can create an atmosphere of stress in your bedroom, so it’s important to tidy it up from time to time.
“It’s also important to get rid of unnecessary or broken accessories. Jewellery, belts and handbags that are never worn or that are broken take up space and can cause decision fatigue every morning. Be honest with yourself about what you should keep, donate or throw away,” advises Gabay.
Items that should be in other rooms
The expert noted that bedrooms can often become rooms where things are dumped that don’t belong there. These could be old receipts, papers, sports bags or random household items.
“It’s time to put these things where they belong. Take a few minutes every day to put things in their proper places so that clutter never accumulates,” Gabay added.
Extra chargers
Most people charge their phones overnight by the bed, but when it comes to a laptop, headphones or tablet, these things don’t have to be charged in the bedroom. Chances are those cords will get tangled and dirty.
“The bedroom should be a retreat from the outside world, not an extension of your office. Reduce screen time, replace bedside chargers with discreet charging drawers or unplug them altogether to create a space that is more conducive to rejuvenation,” emphasised Hilde Leiagat, CEO of luxury bedding brand Pom Pom at Home.
Too many decorative pillows
Two or three decorative cushions can add colour and texture to a bedroom, but most of us don’t need as many as seven. According to Leiagat, more is not always better when it comes to decoration.
“Although layering adds comfort, too many pillows can make a bed look cluttered rather than cosy,” she explained.
Large lamps
Lighting can have a significant impact on the atmosphere of a room, which is very important for the bedroom, but it is worth looking at the lamps themselves and how they affect the atmosphere of the room.
“You know what your bedroom doesn’t need this year? Bulky bedside lamps. Instead, we offer pendants and sconces that create an elegant look while also freeing up valuable space on your nightstand,” said Gale Sitomer Design partner Cara Welten.
