It is better to wash windows when the glass is not exposed to direct sunlight, but still has enough light
Window cleaning often takes a lot of time and effort, especially if the right approach is not followed. It is important to choose the right time, prepare the necessary tools and use effective methods. RBC-Ukraine provides recommendations on how to make window glass perfectly clean without much effort.
Choosing the right time
The best time to clean windows is when there is not direct sunlight but still enough light on the panes. The ideal time is in the morning or evening, or on cloudy days.
If you clean your windows in the sun, the cleaning solution will dry faster than you can wipe it off and leave streaks. It’s also worth checking the weather forecast and postponing cleaning if rain is expected.
Prepare the necessary tools
For classic window cleaning you will need
- frame and window sill sponge
- reusable cloths or rags for windows
- polishing microfibre
- soap solution container
If you want to speed up the process, you can use special tools.
A rubber squeegee will help remove excess liquid, a brush on a telescopic handle will help you reach hard-to-reach places, and a magnetic brush will make it easier to clean the outside. Automatic windscreen wipers and robotic washers can make the process much easier, but they can be expensive.
Choosing cleaning products
You can use both specialised glass cleaners and homemade solutions. One of the most effective options is a mixture of water and table vinegar in the proportion of 1:1. For cleaning frames and window sills, a soap solution with a few drops of liquid soap or a universal detergent is suitable. It is important to check that the chosen detergent is suitable for the material of your windows – plastic or wood.
Preparing the window for cleaning
Before you start cleaning, you need to clear the window sill – remove flowers, lift or remove blinds and roller blinds. They should also be wiped down with a damp cloth, as dust accumulates on them. Next, wash the frame and fittings to avoid smudges and dirt on the already clean glass. Pay special attention to the handles and the inner corners between the glass and the frame.
How to get rid of heavy soiling
If the window is very dirty, especially on the outside, you should first wash it with a soapy water solution. Wipe the surface with a sponge and soapy water, then scrub it off with a clean, damp sponge. You can remove any remaining moisture with a dry cloth or rubber scraper. This will help remove the base layer of dirt before applying glass cleaner.
Polishing to a high gloss
To make the glass shine, apply cleaner to a reusable cloth and wipe the window in a circular motion. Afterwards, use a dry microfibre cloth to remove any residue and prevent streaks.
For the outside, you can use a telescopic or magnetic brush. If you live high up and the window does not open, it is better to use the services of a cleaning company.
Finishing touches
Don’t forget the mosquito nets – they accumulate dust, which later settles on the windows. They can be cleaned with a sticky clothes roller or washed with a stiff brush and detergent. The window sill should also be cleaned after window cleaning, as dust and water droplets get on it.
