Second hand furniture: what to look out for when buying second hand furniture

Commission shops and markets can be found not only in big towns but also in small towns

Buying second hand furniture and decor is not only an opportunity to save money, but also a way to find unique pieces you won’t see in the mass market. However, as Real Simple has revealed buying furniture at thrift shops, clearance sales or online is not as easy as it seems.

Don’t buy things you haven’t checked out

This is the first and foremost rule: inspect your furniture carefully before buying. A quick review may not reveal damage, cracks or other imperfections. Check the quality of the item, its weight, markings, materials and age. If you’re not sure about a particular piece, do your research: compare prices of similar items, for example. Even if the price seems attractive, think twice about whether the purchase is justified given the condition of the item.

Don’t buy items that are difficult to restore

A few cosmetic defects can be fixed, but if the furniture requires complex repairs, be realistic about your skills. For example, improving the look of a wooden table or repairing a crack in pottery is doable. However, upholstering furniture requires a certain level of professionalism and a lot of expense in materials and labour. If you’re new to renovation or don’t have enough time, it’s best to forgo the purchase.

Don’t walk away if you’ve found “your” thing

If you like an item but you’re not sure yet, it’s best not to leave it in the shop, as you may not find one like it again. Unique things, especially rare or one-of-a-kind items, are in high demand. Therefore, if you are really affected by something, purchase it. Otherwise, there is a risk that someone else will do it and you will be left with disappointment.

Don’t shop on the weekend

If you can, visit thrift shops and sales on weekdays. On weekends, shops are crowded with shoppers and the selection of items may be limited. Many thrift shops restock their selection on a particular day, giving you a chance to find unique items without too much competition.

Don’t use hyper-specific search terms

Online marketplaces can also be a great source for finding vintage furniture. If you use online platforms, avoid search phrases that are too specific and concrete. Try different variations of the query for the same item. For example, instead of a precise query for “curved table,” search alternative descriptions like “wavy table,” “C-shaped table,” or even just “table.” More search options allow you to find things that might have gone unnoticed.

Avoid the temptation of “bargain” deals

If you find an item at an attractive price, but it doesn’t fit your needs or you don’t really like it, it’s best to pass. It’s hard not to buy something at a good price, but it’s important to remember: every item should fit your interior and meet your needs. If you say no to an item that doesn’t quite fit, it opens up the opportunity to say yes to an item that will truly become a jewel in your home.

What to do to make a successful purchase

Thrift shops and markets can be found not only in big cities, but also in small towns. If you live in a big city, it is worth going to a small town where there are fewer hunters for vintage items and the chance of finding something unusual is much higher. Second hand furniture is an opportunity to fill your home with unique and antique pieces with history.
