According to the doctor, many factors affect life expectancy
Strong hips are key to an active and healthy life. Research suggests that strengthening the thigh muscles not only improves physical endurance, but also reduces the risk of injury and contributes to a long life. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Instagram page of American doctor Kunal Suda.
What’s worth knowing
According to the doctor, many factors affect life expectancy. Some are beyond our control, such as genetics, disease and injury.
However, people can adjust other things, such as their diet and how often they get medical checkups. Exercise is also important, as regular physical activity helps you stay active and healthy.
So it pays to exercise for at least 150 minutes a week. But concentrating exercise on a specific part of the body can also be beneficial.
Dr Sood explained that the quadriceps – the large muscles on the front of the thigh – can affect your life expectancy.
“The secret to a long life may be in your thighs. Recent studies show that the strength of skeletal muscles, especially the quadriceps, is a strong indicator of overall health and longevity,” he added.
Studies show that greater upper and lower body strength can reduce the risk of death, regardless of age.
To improve hip strength, the doctor recommended three exercises – squats, lunges and resistance training. They will help strengthen your legs and increase your life span by years.
What else affects longevity
Good nutrition
Eat more vegetables and fruit (colourful, for a full spectrum of micronutrients). Avoid sugar, trans fats and processed foods. Protein is important for muscle, especially as we age. It is found in legumes, eggs and dairy products. Also remember to drink enough water a day.
Sleep
It is worth sleeping 7-9 hours a night, at the same time. Poor sleep affects immunity, metabolism and the brain.
Abandoning bad habits
Don’t smoke, minimise alcohol or give it up completely.
In addition, socialising can prolong life. Loneliness has a serious impact on health, especially in old age.
