Jewellers recommend removing jewellery before going to bed, washing hands, showering or playing sports

Many people do not take off their jewellery even before going to bed, without thinking that such a habit can turn into trouble – both for you and for the jewellery itself. RBC-Ukraine asked jewellers from the Strong&Precious Foundation about this.

Risk of damaging a piece of jewellery

When we sleep, we move and roll over, which puts additional strain on the delicate elements of a piece of jewellery. Chains can become tangled or broken, rings can become deformed, and inserts can become loose or even fall out.

Health hazards

Hard elements of jewellery can press on the skin, scratch or even cause micro-traumas. Allergic reactions to metals can also occur during prolonged contact.

Lost lustre

If you don’t remove your jewellery when you shower, wash your hands or sleep, a thin film of soap, cream or care products builds up on its surface. This gradually “dulls” the lustre of the stones and metal. Gold, silver or platinum jewellery becomes dull and you will have to clean it more often or even have it professionally polished.

When to remove your jewellery

Jewellers recommend removing your jewellery before going to bed, washing your hands, showering or playing sports. And to maintain their shine, periodically wash them in warm water with a drop of mild dishwashing detergent and a soft brush or in a special jewellery cleaning solution.

For professional cleaning, consult a jeweller. Be especially careful with pearls, as they are very sensitive to external influences.
