How to make a small bathroom comfortable: last chance tips

In a small bathroom, doors should not open inwards, as this takes up valuable space

A small bathroom can be very comfortable if you get the design and layout right. While the size of the room does matter, it is the needs and habits of the occupants that matter.

RBC-Ukraine offers win-win techniques that will help you make a small bathroom comfortable and functional.

Combine bathroom and toilet

One of the easiest and most effective ways to maximise the space of a small bathroom is to combine the bathroom and toilet. This way you can get rid of the unnecessary partition, which limits the space, and also make room for other elements of the interior. For example, the door can be replaced by a bathroom cabinet or a washing machine.

Combining the two rooms does not require any special permits, as long as the overall boundaries of the room are not changed. However, it must be recorded in the technical passport to avoid problems when selling the flat.

Choose your bathtub wisely

When choosing a bathtub, it is important to pay attention not only to its external dimensions, but also to the shape of the bowl. Many models have a large outer part but a small inner part, which is not the best option for a small bathtub.

You should also avoid installing hot tubs in small spaces because of their large size and the need for regular maintenance. Whirlpool showers or specialised shower racks are good alternatives that not only save space but also give a sense of luxury.

Hide the cistern in the wall

To save space in the bathroom, you can hide the flush system in the wall. Installing a false wall will not only hide the cistern, but will also allow you to place other bathroom fittings or even a boiler. This solution not only frees up space, but also makes the bathroom visually more spacious and aesthetically appealing.

Use corners

Corners in small bathrooms are often left unused, although they are ideal for placing bathroom fixtures and furniture. For example, you can install a corner sink or toilet. Today, there are even special corner models of sanitary ware that allow you to significantly save space.

If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can use corners for shelves or decorative elements, which will also help to make the room more functional.

Install the right doors

In a small bathroom, doors should not open inwards, as this takes up valuable space. If it is not possible to re-hang the door, a folding or sliding door is a good option.

Folding doors don’t take up much space when opened, and sliders are a good compromise for small spaces. This will allow you to maximise the available floor space without compromising on convenience.

Install a compact sink

If your family is small, you can combine the bathroom and toilet and install a small sink, such as a corner sink. This will make it easier to use the bathroom and save space.

If you have a large family, it is advisable to consider the option of combining the toilet and sink in one unit, which will save space. It is important to pay attention to models with thin walls – they are more ergonomic and suitable for limited spaces.
