Alcohol consumption is quite commonplace for many people. However, while moderate consumption is not usually harmful, physician Richard Restak has determined in his work that it can be harmful to the brain once you reach a certain age. At what age you should stop drinking alcohol, Marca tells us.

What does Dr Richard Restak say about alcohol?

The first thing to bear in mind is that the specialist’s focus is, of course, on alcohol consumption and not on non-alcoholic drinks. If alcohol is consumed on a regular basis, there are a number of risks that can severely affect the body over time.

The age at which this doctor believes alcohol consumption should be reduced or stopped is age 65 and above. When entering this age category, the body begins to lose neurons more noticeably and alcohol can accelerate this process. In addition, excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages can damage memory and other cognitive functions; something that, from Richard’s age, already occurs naturally and can make it worse.

All of these effects of excessive alcohol consumption can lead to dementia. For these reasons it is best if you are close to this age to consider drinking non-alcoholic beer, grape juice or reduce your intake if you are a frequent drinker.

Physician Recommendations

Depending on the individual case and alcohol dependence, some recommendations will be more or less appropriate than others. On the one hand, you should consider stopping or minimising alcohol consumption from the age of 65-70. As we have noted before, alcohol at this age can be much more harmful due to physical and mental deterioration.

On the other hand, it is important to note that alcohol consumption is not beneficial in itself like the properties of beer or wine. This may seem difficult to understand, but if you can take advantage of the benefits of these drinks without including alcohol, do so.

It will be much more beneficial to you and your health. If someone around us is causing anxiety and excessive drinking, we need to help them find a way out, especially if they are already experiencing the effects of it.
