Sushi muffins: an interesting recipe for a quick fix

There is always room for experimentation in the world of cookery, especially when it is simple, spectacular and delicious. One such gastronomic discovery was sushi muffins – a modern variation on the theme of favourite Japanese dishes, combining the aesthetics of sushi with the convenient format of muffins.

This recipe was shared on the foodblog_kristi page and has become a real hit. Sushi muffins are more than just a snack. It is a bright, flavourful and visually appealing treat, perfect for both everyday menus and festive tables.

Recipe

Ingredients:

For the rice

  • Sushi rice 150 g
  • Water 220 ml
  • Rice or apple cider vinegar 2 tbsp.
  • Sugar 1 tsp
  • Salt ½ tsp

For the stuffing

  • Crab sticks 250 g
  • Hard cottage cheese 80 g
  • Red caviar (you can use imitation caviar) 100 g
  • Mayonnaise 2 tbsp
  • Soy sauce 1 tbsp
  • Cream sauce 1-2 tbsp

Optional

  • Nori sheets 4 pcs.
  • Unagi or Teriyaki sauce

Preparation

  1. Rinse the rice thoroughly several times until the water is clear.
  2. Fill with water in a ratio of 1:1.5. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid and simmer for 15 minutes without opening the lid. Then remove from the heat and leave to infuse for another 15 minutes under the lid.
  3. Mix together the vinegar, sugar and salt, heat a little until dissolved. Pour the dressing into the warm rice, stir gently and leave to cool.
  4. Chop the crab sticks finely or grate them on a large grater. Grate the cheese as well. Add the caviar, mayonnaise, soy sauce and your favourite cream sauce. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Cut the nori leaves into four squares. Place each square in a muffin mould (preferably silicone or oiled) to make baskets.
  6. Place some rice on the bottom, pressing down firmly with a spoon. Top with a generous portion of the filling.
  7. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Bake the muffins for 10 minutes. They should be lightly browned and the cheese slightly melted.
  8. Before serving, drizzle Unagi or Teriyaki sauce over each muffin. Garnish with green onions, sesame seeds or extra caviar if desired.

Tips:

  • Sushi rice needs to be sticky, so use a special variety of short-grain rice.
  • It is better to take high-quality nori – they do not tear and keep their shape during baking.
